The bumper is a node for stopping trains at the end of a track. In real life it is often called a buffer stop. The bumper was particularly useful in the early days before trains would brake automatically to avoid going off the end of the tracks.

The bumper still uses older textures than the rest of the rails and its model could definitely use improvement.
