2022-06-25

Note: this page should be about the discussion that took place during the conference itself. Comments should be written elsewhere, e.g. on the mailing list.

This conference is mainly about the livery system for Advtrains. The conference started at 20:05 UTC. Some participants used voice chat, but others were text-only. File your own notes beside others' notes in the below sections and leave a (“Notes by @name”) statement. You may create new sections if you feel the current ones don't encompass the entire scope of the conference.

Painter Tool

(Notes by @W3RQ01)

*The first topic was the painter tool where @W3RQ01 exposed his proposal (posted in the wiki) that is composed by the current rgb sliders and by another section which has pre-made skins and the player has to select them via list of the available skins.

His proposal was more focused on the simplicity of the painter tool, in a way to finally stop using the Bike painter tool. @W3RQ01 also exposed his point of view regarding the problem of the painter tool.

Followed @Blockhead proposal, a more complex one with different types of customisation based on the train model. He made some nice sketches of the formspec of his proposal and pointed out the desire to include a 3d model preview inside of it.

Still WIP, if you have some notes, please contribute

(Notes by @Blockhead)

  • It was agreed we needed our own train painter tool separate from bike mod, and the proposed formspec seemed agreeable.
  • It was agreed that to begin with, backwards compatibility with the bike painter needs to be maintained so that E231 and doxy minitram will continue to work.
  • It was agreed that wagon mods will handle their own painting
  • The 3D model preview for the standard painting formspec seemed feasible with a model[] formspec element, and the livery texture string can be applied to that.
  • There was consensus that in the UI for multi-component liveries, deletion needs confirmation or to be quite hard to do accidentally at least.
  • There was consensus that an apply button needs to be separate and that liveries shouldn't automatically be applied, to make aborting changes easy.
  • It was agreed a train painter track was a lower priority than the hand-based painter and should come later
  • The concern about survival mode was raised. There was a proposal that the wagon mod itself should handle coming up with the recipes and requiring materials.
  • Later in the conference, 56i brought up the idea of making livery customisation available from the driver's seat. This was inspired by plane simulators where planes can be customised on the ground before taking off.
    • Maverick2797 and others disagreed mostly because livery is irrelevant to the operation.

Better subway wagon for Basic Trains

(Notes by @Blockhead)

  • This has been a work in progress by Blockhead for some time, and is basically feature-complete
  • The reason it has not been submitted is to prepare a patch for transitioning disco trains & subway colored mod wagons into standard subway wagons. This requires a core change for registering 'wagon transitions', which change wagon types at load time.
  • W3RQ01 commented that he has been running that subway wagon on a server he co-administrates for some time without issues and it should be ready for release in that aspect.

Aging / Weathering wagons

(Notes by @Blockhead)

  • It was agreed that this was a lower priority than livery functions, and will probably come after if at all.
  • There was discussion of implementation, which continued from discussion between Blockhead and W3RQ01 prior to the conference:
    • W3RQ01 mentioned that his first idea of basing it on the day/night cycle does not work in case the time changes with a command.
    • Another idea was to base it on time passing.
      • This idea would also make trains age even when in storage, which seemed wrong
    • The final idea from W3RQ01 - which seemed to work better - was to base aging on distance travelled.
      • At least one implementation was discussed: A separate mod that runs on a timer and iterates all wagons, measures their distance travelled and adds it to the age. Wagons would then calculate their final appearance as their livery plus aging with more texture modifiers on top.
  • Marnack noted that the DlxTrains implementation is to have the aging elements in the same texture file as the rest of the wagon, and use spritesheeting/cropping to select different aging patterns.
  • It was a agreed aging must be wagon-specific, because of the various sizes and UV map patterns of every different wagon. A generic 'paint chip' or 'rust spot' or 'dirt layer' probably would not work very well.
  • 56independent mentioned that the train should be washable.
    • I (Blockhead) think that like a lot of tools there should be a train washing hand tool and a fixed position train washer 'track' or larger apparatus.
    • There may also be a tool to artificially age wagons.
  • 56independent mentioned that he thought the aging should be configurable in 3 ways:
    • Aging per metre travelled
    • Aging per unit time
    • Aging according to acceleration

Graffiti on Wagons

(Notes by @Blockhead)

W3RQ01 brought a verbal proposal / request for comment about the idea of graffiti on trains.

  • It was agreed that graffiti was a lower priority than aging and would only be likely to happen a while into the future.
  • It was agreed that graffiti would be drawn on top of the texture stack, after the base livery and any aging, since that's how spray cans would work on a real train.
  • W3RQ01 may sample graffiti from real trains or produce his own work.
    • Graffiti from the real world may be easier to prepare, or more realistic
    • Graffiti can be harder to draw on the computer, but might have more charm.
  • Blockhead proposed that graffiti would live in its own separate mod just like aging.
  • There was discussion of the privileges needed to paint a train.
    • The most likely requirement was train_operator plus wagon ownership; or wagon whitelisting to paint others' wagons; or train_admin to paint any wagon at all.
    • On some servers graffiti might not require any privileges.
  • There was light-hearted discussion about whether advtrains would work on an Anarchy and/or free-for-all server, and about graffiti-ing public transport trains on servers.

The conference topics had mostly been discussed at this point; the following topics are less related to livery.

MBB's mods

(Notes by @Blockhead)

  • MBB licensed his mods under a CC licence recently, and Blockhead and W3RQ01 have wanted to move them to a centralised place not under a single person's account where they can be maintained, since MBB is not interested in Minetest any more.
  • W3RQ01 volunteered as maintainer and possibly to improve/update art assets especially textures in MBB's old mods.
  • A poll was brought forward to decide what platform the maintained MBB mod repos would live on. NotABug won against GitHub, GitLab, NotABug and possibly others that got no or minimal votes. Blockhead and W3RQ01 will be looking at where to file the mods on NotABug soon.

General advtrains business

(Notes by @Blockhead)

Ywang brought up several items of general business:

  • Doxy's destination displays code was useful for the outside of trains, but interior passenger information displays would be good too.
  • The idea of an actually interactive driving experience with operating controls came up. It seemed like it would be hard to make work within Minetest's engine limitations:
    • Formspecs are too restricting/divorced from the real world.
    • HUD elements can't be clicked on in any way.
    • Trains in the dark would probably have controls that are too hard to see if they have the same light applied as the wagon enity.
    • Note form later: Keyboard controls are also very restricted in Minetest.
  • The automated test world that was running under SourceHut CI was borked because it used mismatched versions of Minetest and Minetest Game.
    • Blockhead questioned why it was on MTG and not devtest (or later thought: minipeli or something equally stripped down; the reason may be if we want to test crafting).
  • Ywang said that testing his Distant Signalling implementation would be hard, and he might only be able to write an overall test - “module” or “integration test” (wording by Blockhead) - rather than unit tests
    • Blockhead said that parts should still be unit testable like the “set_aspect” function of some signals.
    • Doxydoxy mentioned that busted was good enough for his minitram mod with minimal use of the Minetest APIs.

(Notes by @ywang)

The notes here are mostly to complement Blockhead's notes and to present my own perspective/thought when I mentioned these points during the conference. -ywang

  • @doxydoxy's destination display would also be useful for interior displays. (Later thought: I am no longer sure about this, considering that interior displays can have way more complicated styles than exterior displays. Some testing would be needed for this)
  • With the eye attachment offset, it could be more sensible to attach the display on the train itself instead of using a HUD, and it could be possible to create a slightly more interactive control system instead of relying too much on formspecs. However, the MT engine has some restrictions for this idea (see Blockhead's notes). I considered this and the point above to be partly relevant to liveries as these are all internally implemented with textures in some way.
  • The CI setup for the test world broke in mid-June due to an commit to MTG that required a later version of the MT engine.
    • Note from later: For some reason I did not think about devtest when creating the test world. This turned out to be quite a mistake.
  • As I was working on distant signaling around the time, I noted that some tests I wrote are not strictly unittests because there are tests that can be used for multiple components at the same time and creating individual tests would be relatively time-consuming.
  • I also mentioned localization as it appeared to me that there was some interest in l10n. This point more or less boiled down to “take time for it - localization is not easy”.

56independent says:Interesante
56independent says:Honestly, vandalism would be cool to add to the server lore of mine. The people from the people mod are angry that i build a line through their village so they vandalize, using ghost train queues as oppertunities

56independent says:People grief it for the sake of griefing
56independent says:Combine vandalism and ageing in the same layers?
56independent says:Seems like a way to reduce work
21:48
Marnack

21:57
